The 8000 kms of Managed Snowmobile Trails in the province of New Brunswick are maintained and groomed by local NBFSC Member clubs. The trail permit is a decal, which is affixed to the bottom dead center of a snowmobile`s windshield to allow you access to this trail system. The maintenance of these trails is performed primarily by volunteers and the sale of the trail permits are the clubs main source of revenue for this maintenance.

The snowmobile must meet the regulations of your province / state, and you must keep proof of registration with the snowmobile. On the trail you may be asked to show proof of registration, proof of liability insurance, and proof of trail permit purchase if stopped by a law enforcement officer. The law which governs snowmobiling in New Brunswick is the Off Road Vehicle Act. Some points in this Act you should be aware of:

  •  Section 3 (1)  No owner of an off-road vehicle shall drive it or permit it to be driven unless
    (b) a valid clearly visible number plate or decal issued under paragraph (3)(a) is securely mounted in a conspicuous position
    (i) if the vehicle is a motorized snow vehicle, on the snow flaps of the
     vehicle.
  • Section 7.1 (1) no person shall operate a motorized snow vehicle on a motorized snow vehicle managed trail unless
    1. a motorized snow vehicle trail permit that is a decal is permanently attached to and conspicuously displayed on the motorized snow vehicle
    2. if the motorized snow vehicle has a windshield, approximately centre at the bottom of the windshield
    3. if the motorized snow vehicle does not have a windshield, on the left side of the cowling of the vehicle
  • Section 7.1 (3) no person shall operate a motor vehicle, other than a motorized snow vehicle operated in accordance with this Act, on a motorized snow vehicle managed trail from December 1 to the next following April 15, inclusive.
  •  Section 19.1 (SUMMARY):
    1. AGE : 5 YEARS OLD AND UNDER:
      No one 5 years of age or younger will be permitted to operate a snowmobile under any circumstances, and cannot participate in snowmobile safety training courses.
    2. AGE : 6-11 YEARS OLD
      Those between the ages of 6 and 11 years old will only be permitted to operate snowmobiles 120cc’s or less, and only on a “Closed Course”.  This age group requires snowmobile safety training and supervision by and adult over 19 years of age who has also had snowmobile safety training.
    3. AGE : 12-13 YEARS OLD
      Those between the ages of 12 and 13 years old will only be permitted to operate snowmobiles 340cc’s or less, snowmobile safety training and supervision by an adult over 19 years of age who has also had snowmobile safety training.
    4. AGE : 14-15 YEARS OLD
      Those between the ages of 14 and 15 years old will only be permitted to operate snowmobiles 340cc’s or less, snowmobile safety training and supervision by an adult over 19 years of age who has also had snowmobile safety training. 
    5. AGE : 16 YEARS OLD & OLDER
      After the age of 16, there are no restrictions.

  • Section 21 No person shall drive an off-road vehicle or be an occupant of such a vehicle unless he is properly wearing a helmet that complies with the standards prescribed by the regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act.
  •  Section 24 A peace officer may make a request or a signal, as the case may be, to the operator of an off-road vehicle:
    1. to produce the original or a photocopy of the registration certificate for the vehicle,
    2. … to produce a valid motor vehicle liability card issued by an insurer in respect of the vehicle, ($200,000 coverage)
